PREVENTING SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE
From 26 October 2024, employers have a legal duty to take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This includes harassment by colleagues, as well as harassment from third parties such as customers, clients, or service users.
Sexual harassment can be a one-off incident or a repeated pattern of behaviour and may include: making sexual remarks, asking intrusive questions, telling offensive jokes, displaying inappropriate images, or unwanted physical contact.
Employers should act proactively, assessing workplace risks, reviewing policies, and putting measures in place to foster a safe, inclusive environment.
For detailed guidance on compliance and best practice, ACAS provides comprehensive advice for all UK workplaces.

TAKING REASONABLE STEPS TO PREVENT HARASSMENT
The law requires employers to consider what steps are reasonable to prevent harassment in their organisation.
This might include:
• Conducting risk assessments to identify potential ‘hotspots’ for harassment
• Implementing clear, well-communicated policies and procedures
• Providing training to employees and managers
• Ensuring reporting processes are safe, confidential, and effective
• Supporting employees through regular check-ins, surveys, or open communication
By embedding these measures into your workplace culture, you demonstrate that your organisation takes harassment seriously and is actively working to prevent it.
